Stop monitoring tools. Start monitoring promises.

The most useful alert is not that a metric crossed a line. It is that a promise to a customer or the business is at risk.

Tool-level alerts are easy to create and hard to live with. They describe symptoms in the language of infrastructure, then ask a human to reconstruct the business meaning under pressure.

Promise monitoring reverses the model. Begin with the outcome you care about, then collect the signals that prove whether that outcome is healthy.

For checkout reliability, that might combine deployment status, application errors, payment failures and conversion. For an AI workflow, it might combine completion rate, latency, token cost and the downstream record the agent was supposed to create.

When alerts inherit that context, routing becomes simpler, noise falls and the first message already contains the evidence needed to act.
